As an Environmental Health Officer, I am often asked if we have the power to make arrests. The answer is yes, but it is not something that we do on a daily basis. We have to follow the same rules as any other law enforcement officer when it comes to making an arrest.
We must have probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed and that the person we are arresting is the one who committed the crime.
If you break environmental health laws, an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) can arrest you.
EHOs are responsible for enforcing a wide range of environmental health laws, including those relating to food safety, noise pollution and public hygiene.
If an EHO believes that you have committed an offence, they can arrest you without a warrant.
Once arrested, you will be taken to a police station where you may be charged with the offence.
If convicted, you could face a fine or even imprisonment. So if you don’t want to end up in jail, make sure you follow the law!
